Hachiko

My sister, who used to raise Akitas, told me the story of Hachiko, an Akita who lived in Tokyo before World War II. His story of loyalty is known to almost everyone in Japan. This loyal dog waited at Shibuya Railway Station for his owner to return from work every day. When his owner, a professor at Tokyo University, died at work, Hachiko continued to wait. He waited faithfully every day until his own death almost 10 years later. The people of Japan, with donations from people around the world who had heard of Hachiko, built a statue on the site where Hachiko waited.

I wrote a story about Hachiko which appeared in the January 2006 issue of FACES magazine. Check it out -- and find other stories about Hachiko -- at your library!
